TRANSLATION

Driving Licence Translation in Dubai and the UAE

15 April 2024

Quick answer

A foreign driving licence does not automatically require translation in every Dubai exchange case. RTA’s current exchange service identifies particular licence origins for which a legalised translation is required, while many eligible licences require no translation. Check the current RTA country-specific table first; where translation is required, names, licence number, categories, issue/expiry dates and restrictions must match the original exactly.

Search intent / content role Driving-licence translation intent; avoid promising conversion eligibility.

A foreign driving licence may need translation when it is submitted to an authority, insurer, court, employer or another organisation that requires the information in Arabic or another accepted language. Translation does not itself convert, validate or exchange a licence; it presents the source information accurately in the required language.

Information Typically Translated

  • Holder’s full name
  • Date and place of birth where shown
  • Licence number
  • Issue and expiry dates
  • Issuing authority and country
  • Vehicle categories or classes
  • Restrictions, endorsements or observations
  • Addresses and other visible official details

Why Name Consistency Matters

The spelling of the licence holder’s name should be checked against the passport, Emirates ID or other documents in the same application where appropriate. Inconsistent transliteration can cause questions even when the underlying identity is the same.

Certified vs Standard Translation

A standard translation may be suitable for internal understanding, while an official procedure may require certified legal translation. The receiving authority decides the acceptable form, so confirm the current requirement before submission.

How to Prepare the Licence

  • Send a clear colour image of the front and back
  • Include any attached or supplementary pages
  • State the source and target languages
  • Identify the receiving authority and purpose
  • Provide passport spelling where name matching is important
  • Confirm the deadline

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a translated licence guarantee licence exchange in the UAE?

No. Eligibility for exchange or recognition is determined by the competent licensing authority.

Can PLT translate both sides of the licence?

Yes. Both sides should be provided when they contain relevant information.

Can the translation be arranged remotely?

Document review and translation can generally be coordinated electronically, subject to any original-document requirement imposed by the receiving authority.

PLT quality review before delivery

  • Names and transliterations against passports or existing official records
  • Document, certificate or licence number; issue and expiry dates
  • Issuing authority, place of issue, stamps, seals and annotations
  • Dates, relationships, grades/categories or other document-specific data
  • Intended receiving authority and whether certified translation is actually required

Check the RTA country-specific requirement first

Dubai RTA does not require a translated foreign licence in every exchange case. Its current exchange service publishes country-specific requirements and identifies licences for which a legalised translation is required. The list can change, so applicants should check the current RTA service page for the issuing country and nationality before ordering translation solely for licence exchange.

Details that must match the foreign licence

Where translation is required, the translation should clearly reproduce the holder’s name, licence number, issuing authority, issue and expiry dates, vehicle categories, restrictions and any endorsements visible on the licence. Both sides should be supplied when both contain information. If a name already appears on the Emirates ID or passport, that spelling should normally be used as the consistency reference unless the receiving authority instructs otherwise.

Translation does not establish exchange eligibility

Eligibility to exchange a foreign licence depends on RTA rules, including the issuing country, nationality and other service conditions. Translation cannot make an otherwise ineligible licence exchangeable. If the licence lacks expected security features or RTA requests verification, additional embassy or consular documentation may also be required under the current service rules.
